They say that character is who you are when no one is watching. This is definitely a true statement, but people SEE your character in your daily interactions. If you are a swindler at heart, then your actions will eventually tell that tale. This is the same if you are a genuinely kind and honest business person.
In every story, people want to care about the characters. In order to make people care, you need character development.
This is a moment to let people into the life of the business or the life of the business owner (and even the lives of some of the employees). Telling your customers who you are, where you came from, and what your mission is can draw customers to you and create brand loyalty. But this happens when the story is told from a very personal perspective.
An Example of Character Development
One of my favorite character development moments in cinema comes from one of my favorite movies: JAWS. It is the moment when Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), and Quint (Robert Shaw) are trading scar stories. It is at night on the boat with one small bulb lighting the scene. Displaying their personal scars was a fun way to show their personal histories in their respective fields. It was fun until Hooper asked Quint about a particular scar. This was one of the more powerful moments of the film and it gives you specific insight into the character of Quint. WATCH THIS CLIP.
Quint has already been in the movie for quite some time. You know he is a ship captain, and you know he’s a little crazy. But you have no idea what made him who he is until he opens up about his deep personal history.
How Deep Is Too Deep?
Now we aren’t advocating for spilling your soul to the general public. That’s a little much. But what is the reason you’re in business? Why are you doing what you do? And why do you run things the way you do? Just like Quint, every aspect of your story has a story.
